A Christmas message from the District Grand Prefect for London

The season of good cheer is upon us; it is the time to send cards to people we have not seen for the last year, to receive gifts which do not fit or we do not need, the time to eat and drink far too much, to squeeze into packed trains and be generally trampled underfoot in crowded shops. And it is cold. Yes, it is Christmas!!  I like Christmas, and as you can see from my opening words it has its funny side but it also brings out the best in everyone and everything. Family, community, friendships, helping others and performing simple acts of kindness have an added pleasure at this time of year. They truly bless those who give as well as those who receive.

As I look back over the year I reflect on the progress which the District has made, the tremendous increase in our numbers - to all of you new members, you are all most welcome into our marvellous Order and I hope and trust you are enjoying your membership of your Councils. I recall the lunch which was held at the Guildhall and then our Annual Meeting which attracted record numbers and was followed by an excellent meal. For the District it has been a most successful twelve months, I made numerous Official and Non-Official visits, met with most of you and generally found everyone in good heart.

Next year, by popular request, we will organise more social events; build upon our growing and thriving recruitment programme and continue with our successful website which will underpin and support our activities. Our year will culminate in the Annual Meeting – 19th November 2016 - where we hope to see an increase our attendance figures yet again. Keep an eye on the site to monitor where and when these events will happen. Also, the site will advertise when our Councils will be meeting and when there will be an Official Visit. Please join us – all are welcome and a most enjoyable evening is assured.

So, let’s get back to Christmas, to reflect on the message of Hope which it brings to us and to use that in our own lives by demonstrating our Masonic values on our everyday journey. I am sure that all of us will be surrounded at this time of the year by friends and family, but there are some who are not so fortunate. We still see too many people sleeping rough, some with mental problems, and some who just cannot cope or are just lonely. If you have the chance, please buy them a cup of tea and a sandwich or even say hello; I guarantee you will both feel better.

I wish you, your families and friends Christmas best wishes and I look forward to seeing you all next year which I trust will be a happy and healthy one for all.

Colin
