Londinium No.47 - It's good to be back!

Londinium are back.

Tuesday 18th May 2021 saw the first meeting of a London Council since the lifting of restrictions. 12 Members and guests of Londinium Council No.47 assembled at Mark Masons' Hall to install W. Bro. Stephen Schofield into the chair of St. Lawrence.

What a joy it was, travelling into London, walking up Pall Mall, walking into reception at MMH and greeting the receptionist as if he was some long lost brother, climbing the stairs to the Warwickshire room and finally seeing brethren (albeit with masks on) who we had only seen via zoom meetings during this blip in our masonic lives.

The Council was opened but sadly the first order of business was to remember W. Bro. Mick Randall, who sadly passed away in June 2020. W. Bro. Ian Ness gave the eulogy.

Grand Council Certificates were then presented in fine manner by our District Grand Secretary W. Bro. Scott Cargill, to three of the brethren.

Then it was onto the main event.

W. Bro. Colin Howard as always doing a splendid job of installing W. Bro. Stephen Schofield for the first time as Master in an AMD Council.

The rest of the formalities over the new Master closed the Council and we retired to partake of a wonderful socially distanced meal.

Only 10 dining on 2 tables but the chat and laughter was great to hear. As I said at the start it was a joy to be there from start to finish.
Let us hope that our meetings may now long continue without further interruption.

We were enthralled - "Hearts of Oak - The Story of the VC Part 2"

At the District Spring Social Evening held on 13 April almost 80 members of AMD London, their family, friends and guests, had the pleasure of listening to Mark Smith deliver the second part of his Victoria Cross talk - "Hearts of Oak" - via Zoom. Mark had presented the first part - "For Valour" - at our Autumn Social Evening back in November 2019.

He kept us enthralled with stories of extreme bravery shown by some of the 1355 recipients of the VC; stories which illustrated the types of motivation behind those humbling acts - doing your duty, helping friends and colleagues, or simply "getting angry" at the enemy.

All the stories Mark told support the quotation from Winston Churchill - "To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents...",or, alternatively "cometh the hour, cometh the man."

There were several questions from the audience, after which the District Grand Prefect thanked Mark.

Our grateful thanks to Mark for such a fascinating evening, and for staying on afterwards to chat more about the VC and also his time on Antiques Roadshow.

COI moves to twice monthly meetings

The AMD District of London Council of Improvement is pleased to announce that as from February 2021, we will be adding an additional COI session to be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This means that the COI will be held on the 2nd and Last Tuesdays of the month.

The 2nd Tuesday of each month will focus on the Installation ceremony (primarily the Inner Workings) and as such will be open to current Masters and Past Masters.

The last Tuesday of each month we will continue to practice the 5 degrees. However, we are also mindful that of the 5 degrees, The Red Cross of Babylon (RCB) and Grand High Priest (GHP) need more time due to their complexity and length. So, we intend to alternate between these 2 degrees each month and at the same time combine them by cycling through the other 3 degrees (SLM, KPC & GTS). Each month, therefore, will see either RCB or GHP along with either one of SLM, KOC or GTS.

We hope that by scheduling it this way we will practice all the degrees on a more regular basis than before.

We would therefore hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to get yourself prepared for when we do inevitably return to our Council meetings - and not only be excited about meeting again but be proud to put on the best display we can for our Brothers joining the Order, taking their other degrees or indeed going into the Chair.

The revised schedule can be found on the link below, which also contains a link to the AMD COI registration form to be added to our mailing list.
